Description/ Overview of the Unit

The Department of Psychology is an academic unit under the College of Arts and Social Sciences. The Department of Psychology offers Bachelor of Science in Psychology. The program was created in 2018 under Board Resolution No. 43-2018 while the BA Psychology, the earlier version of BS Psychology was offered since 2004 base on BOR Resolution No. 53-2003.

Historical Background

After years of being under the arms of the Department of Social Sciences, the need for PSYCHOLOGY to establish its own identity not only as a subject but as a degree program in Central Luzon State University was realized, thus the birth of the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and the department of psychology as well. The idea was also supported by the perceived desire to bring the psychology discipline in individuals’ consciousness.

The proposal for the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology Curriculum was given approval in August 2003 based onBOR Resolution No. 53-2003. Less than a year later (May 2004), the Department of Psychology was created. Hence, the BA Psychology Degree Program took its formal step as a curricular offering in June 2004.

As with any events in history, the founding of the Department of Psychology and the degree program marked a significant figure. A well-recognized personality in Philippine Psychology and a noteworthy contributor to the development of Filipino psychology, DR. ANSELMO D. LUPDAG, pushed the idea of offering the degree program.

With Dr. Anselmo D. Lupdag leading the ensemble, the first set of faculty members stirred the Department of Psychology to come into force: Nixon V. Agaser, Maria Rosario I. Bulanan, Candy Reyes, Jay C. Santos, and Evelyn F. Acoba as the first Chair.

Anchored by genuine educational motives and dedicated professionals, the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and the Department of Psychology continue to exert effort in widening the people’s consciousness about understanding the role and relevance of psychology in all aspects of their lives. Such thrust is strengthened by the Department’s emphasis on dynamism in terms of teaching and research. Through time, the need to revise curricular offerings are rooted on the changes in policies and also on the needs of our student-clientele.

On 2017, the need for a revision and develop the current AB Psychology curriculum arise. Fronted by Angelo R. Dullas, the current chair during that time, adjoined by the faculty members of the Department of Psychology, a proposed revision of the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology to be Bachelor of Science in Psychology was in-line with the current changes by the Commission on Higher Education, basically the OBE or Outcome Based Education Curriculum, CMO No. 46 s. of 2012 and the Commission en Banc Resolution No. 231-2017. These turn out to be the basis for the adaptation of the policies, standard and guidelines (PSGs) for the undergraduate programs in Psychology for Higher Education Institutions that offers psychology programs.

The New offering of Bachelor of Science in Psychology is based on the following grounds: The revision of Bachelor of Arts in Psychology to the Bachelor of Science in Psychology is in consonance with the CHED Memorandum Order No. 34 Series of 2017 or also known as the Policies and Standards for Undergraduate Programs in Psychology which discusses the shift to outcome-based education or competency-based standards. On the other hand, it also tackles the minimum requirement for the offering of the BS program in Psychology. Thus, in recognition of this, and in compliance with the CMO No. 34 s. 2017, the Central Luzon State University BA Psychology program “must” be changed to BS Psychology program to become competitive and to face challenges of globalization.

In 2018, the Bachelor of Science in Psychology was approved by the CLSU Board of Regents (BOR Res. No. 43-2018) effective for Academic Year 1st semester 2018-2019. The program was awarded by the Commission on Higher Education Certificate of Program Compliance (CoPC) by the Regional Quality Assurance Team (RQAT) from the same year.
